Planning a holiday on the Sunshine Coast is exciting, but organizing a photoshoot for the entire clan? That can feel like trying to herd seagulls on Hastings Street.
Trust me, I completely understand large family dynamics. I come from a family of 5 siblings with 15 nieces and nephews running around. My husband, Pat, is also one of 5 siblings with 12 nieces and nephews on his side! Between us, family gatherings are beautiful, loud, chaotic, and completely packed, so when you book your extended family photography in Noosa, I'm your gal!
Because I live and breathe big-family life, I know exactly how to turn a massive multi-generational photoshoot into a fun holiday memory instead of a chore. Here is my bulletproof guide to keeping your large Noosa family session light, fast, and completely stress-free, even with lots of little ones running around!
1. Space & Accessibility: Choosing the Right Spot
When you have a large group, narrow boardwalks or tiny rocky alcoves like Little Cove simply won't work. We need wide spaces where toddlers can run safely and grandparents don't have to trek over steep, shifting sand dunes.
My Top Pick: Noosa Spit (River Side): The sand here is flat and solid, making it incredibly easy for grandparents to walk on. Plus, the parking is close by, and the calm river water is completely safe for active little cousins.
The Ocean Alternative: Sunshine Beach: If your family loves the open ocean waves, the wide expanses of Sunshine Beach give a group of 15 or more plenty of breathing room without blocking the path of other beachgoers.

Wrangling three or four separate households into cohesive outfits is usually the hardest part for the main organiser. Save yourself the headache and drop the old rule of everyone wearing identical white shirts.
Instead, give the family group chat three soft, coastal colours to work with—like cream/linen, soft sage green, and faded denim. Instruct everyone to mix and match these tones. If one brother is in a sage linen shirt, his sister can wear a cream dress, and a nephew can wear denim shorts. This keeps the look cohesive, modern, and completely natural.

3. The Shot List: Fast, Fun, and Focused
Large groups lose focus quickly, especially when young kids and grandparents are standing out in the afternoon elements. My strategy is simple: we do the big legacy group portrait first.
Within the first 15 minutes—while everyone's clothes are crisp, hair is neat, and energy is high—we lock in the massive master shot. Once that is safely in the bag, the pressure is entirely off! We then systematically break things down into smaller, fast-paced groups while the rest of the family relaxes nearby:
Grandparents with all their beautiful grandkids.
The original adult siblings with their parents.
Individual nuclear family units (parents with their own kids).
Just the grandparents (because couples rarely get photos of just themselves!).

4. Lean into the Chaos
With dozens of cousins running around, trying to get every single person to look directly at the lens and smile at the exact same millisecond is nearly impossible—and honestly, it's boring!
The most magical memories are the candid ones. Lean into the beautiful chaos of your big family. The images you will cherish most are the ones of uncles swinging toddlers in the air, cousins sharing an inside joke on the sand, and grandparents looking lovingly at the legacy they built.
Bringing your big, loud, wonderful family to Noosa is a milestone worth celebrating. Let’s get everyone together on the sand and capture these memories before the kids grow up any faster.

How long does a large extended family session take?
Most multi-generational sessions take roughly 45-60 minutes. This allows plenty of time to capture the main group shot plus all individual family breakdowns without anyone feeling rushed or exhausted.
What happens if one family unit is running late?
Because Noosa traffic and parking (especially around Hastings Street) can be unpredictable, we always recommend carpooling or arriving 15 minutes early. If someone is delayed, we simply begin shooting the smaller sub-groups who are present so we don't lose the beautiful afternoon light.
Can we include our family dog in the large group portrait?
Absolutely! Dogs are part of the family. However, we must host your session at a designated dog-friendly beach zone, such as Noosa Spit Dog Beach, to ensure your pet can join in legally and safely.
Do we have to pay extra per person for a large group?
Never. Our extended family packages are based on the session time and the delivery of your digital gallery, not a head count. Bring the aunties, the uncles, the cousins, and the grandparents! Check out my easy pricing package here.
Don't worry at all. We reserve priority backup slots in our weekly schedule specifically for weather disruptions. If the weather is unsafe, we will instantly look to shift to the next available dry window during your holiday, or look at a covered location option like the forest canopy at the Spit.
